For the love of doughnuts

Whether you are celebrating Valentine’s Day with your one true love, a best friend, a furry companion or just a bowl of ice-cream and a copy of ‘Love Actually’, it’s a wonderful excuse for people around the world to revel their heart’s desires, which, in some cases, is the decadent joy of biting into a freshly baked doughnut.

Around the world, doughnuts have become a part of everyday culture, with franchises reaping the rewards of this multi-billion dollar industry in locations as far-flung as Moscow, Kuwait and New Delhi. Thankfully, South Africa boasts specialty doughnut stores, thanks to Krispy Kreme South Africa, which opened its first branch of the world famous brand at The Zone in Rosebank in November 2015. Its second store is due to open at the Gautrain station in February.

It would seem that the South African public is already in love with these sugar-topped delights, having purchased in excess of 750 000 of Krispy Kreme’s many products in less than two months! The round-the-clock queues which lasted for weeks prove just how enamored South Africans were to get their first taste of the legendary brand.

Originating in Holland, doughnuts, then called “olykoeks” were brought to the New World by Dutch immigrants back in the 1800s.  Needless to say, they were a hit and, over the course of the next two centuries, doughnuts became more and more complex, as bakeries and franchisers devised ever-more decadent and delicious flavours and fillings to cater to the tastes and whims of doughnut-lovers from every corner of the globe.

According to Krispy Kreme South Africa statistics, local customers have already selected their most-loved doughnuts, favouring the Original Glazed, Caramel Kreme Crunch and Chocolate Iced Custard doughnuts above all others.

In order to celebrate the devotion of its fans, Krispy Kreme is returning the love by indulging customers in a Valentine’s Day themed party, complete with live DJ, a couple-friendly photo-booth and heart-shaped versions of their tasty treats. They’re even giving away a year’s supply of Krispy Kreme doughnuts to one lucky guest. All they need to do is take a photo of themselves in the special Valentines Frame and post it to one of the Krispy Kreme social media sites using #krispykremekindalove.

It would seem that the romance between, well, pretty much everyone and doughnuts is one that will stand the test of time. After all, what more do we need to help us through the good times and the bad than the comforting love of a freshly baked doughnut?
