Soweto Sandwich Baron is the first step into a potentially profitable new frontier

The Sandwich Baron group has seen some remarkable successes in the last while. Aside from expanding on the growth of the business, with the introduction of new stores and owners, the esteemed sandwich connoisseur even gave a deserving entrepreneur the opportunity to win a franchise. In 2013, Sandwich Baron, in association with the Franchise Association of Southern Africa (FASA), announced the competition to give one, hardworking, driven and passionate entrepreneur the opportunity of owning and managing their own Sandwich Baron store. To participate, all entrants underwent various stages of review, where they had to present not only financial records and background information, but also a comprehensive business plan on how they intended to manage a Sandwich Baron store to ensure its success.

While the worthy winner was appointed and has since been running his store in Boksburg successfully, there was another participant who too made a great impression on the judges. Even though she did not win, Gloria Mautloa was the first to be recommended for a new store partnership when the opportunity was presented.

Mautloa entered the ‘Win a franchise’ competition because of her love of the brand and its appeal to consumers who prefer the healthier ‘fast food’ options.

“Sandwich Baron has such a unique offering. From its online ordering to free delivery and fair pricing, the Sandwich Baron concept offers customers greater choice than many other lunchtime food stores. The meals on offer are also a healthier option and because they are always freshly produced on site, they are of a high quality,” she shares.

“When the competition opportunity came up, I knew this was a once in a lifetime chance to become part of something that presents a recipe for success. Although I only made it to the top ten, I knew I wanted to become part of the family.”

Founder of Sandwich Baron, Sally J’Arlette–Joy shares that Mautloa made a great impression on the company and was the first person who came to mind when one of her existing franchisees enquired about a suitable partner for an expansion project within the group.

“Throughout the competition, Gloria demonstrated that she not only understands the franchising business, but that she also has a love for the brand. Her passion stuck with me and I knew she was someone to bear in mind for future,” J’Arlette–Joy adds.

The ideal opportunity did come along when existing store owner, Trevor Mashabane, entered into arrangements with J’Arlette–Joy to be the master franchise licence holder for the township areas. After introducing Mautloa and Mashabane, the business partnership was established and the duo have now taken the Sandwich Baron name to the streets of Soweto, which has presented itself as a fresh frontier with immense potential for profitability for the brand.

Mashabane, who has the majority share in the new store, adds that he looks forward to embarking on the journey with Mautloa. “Our township expansion plans are not only aimed at serving the locals something fresh, new and healthy, but also offering entrepreneurs in these communities the opportunity to embark on ventures of their own. Aside from welcoming new customers into the Sandwich Baron family, our vision is to create jobs for the people who live in these areas.”

On the opportunity afforded to her, Mautloa expressed that she is most grateful to be involved in the Sandwich Baron legacy and even more so, to assist in being able to take this brand into unexplored territories.

“Our arrival has been met with great support thus far and we look forward to creating many memorable experiences for our new customers in future,” Mautloa concludes.
