Sandwich Baron leads the health revolution through low-carb bread

Johannesburg 11 July 2012 - The meal options available for health conscious consumers who are looking for a fast yet delicious bite to eat are limited in today’s fast food market. Yes, salads and grilled options have become a necessity for brands wanting to target the healthier individual, but what about a selection of wholesome, mouth-watering meals which don’t leave consumers wondering how they will need to physically work the meal off.

Sandwich Baron is revolutionising a healthy bread alternative by being the only food franchise in the country to stock and produce call-to-order sandwiches or pitas made from low carbohydrate products.
This low carbohydrate bread decreases the usual negative health effects associated with highly refined carbohydrates, including spiked blood sugar. The product range is particularly suited for diabetics, individuals who want to follow a healthy lifestyle or are on a diet, and those on high protein and low carbohydrate eating plans.

Sally J’Arlette-Joy, Managing Director of Sandwich Baron explains the motivation behind the company’s decision to stock low carbohydrate bread.

“Sandwich Baron has always provided the lunch time trade with a unique alternative in the form of scrumptious sandwiches, pitas and tramezzini’s. In continuing to offer our customers with only the best choices, it seemed fitting to promote an even healthier option through our low carbohydrate range. Not only do we want to satisfy our existing customers’ appetites for healthier options, but we also ensure that people with conditions such as diabetes or wheat allergies have the opportunity to also treat themselves.

“Thus far, our 65 stores have encountered an overwhelming response from their communities, and are immensely satisfied that we have acquired a new customer base through offering these delicious menu items.”

Sandwich Baron’s low carbohydrate products, which are unrefined and have no preservatives or additives, incorporate ingredients such as whole ground almonds, linseed and oats, as opposed to the normal high carbohydrate, and highly refined flours that are present in standard bread sold to the public.

The range offers several advantages over low Glycemic Index (GI) bread, which is traditionally viewed as the best carbohydrate option for those encountering health problems associated with bread.
Sandwich Baron’s low carb bread has 80% less carbohydrates and 70% less calories per slice. A slice from the Healthy-Eating bread range contributes 2.14 grams of calories, while low GI bread contributes 10.4 grams of calories per slice.

Its slow release of carbohydrates also ensures that people eating the bread have more energy over a prolonged period of time, and that their appetites are fulfilled for longer.

J’Arlette-Joy concludes that Sandwich Baron is looking to introduce a low carbohydrate option on its wraps in the near future as well.
