How do you succeed with nothing?
I am
often asked whether it is, in fact, possible to succeed with nothing and my
answer is a resounding “Yes!”

“So how do you succeed with nothing?” you ask.
Here are ten points to consider and use at your discretion.
- YOU
The road to success
starts with YOU. Start your journey by conducting a SWOT analysis on yourself. Knowing
yourself and accepting who you are, are important steps in developing the self-confidence
that will give you a competitive advantage.
Develop your
confidence by placing yourself in situations where you can build, learn and
experience. This does not have to be in your field of expertise, it can be any
situation where you are able to network or conduct small deals or negotiations.
- CULTURE
Being successful
and having money is a culture, a lifestyle and an attitude towards money and
success. Having money, being rich and having a successful career is a culture
and like attracts like. Conversely, the ”have not’s” exhibit a trend of not
doing and of blaming the world for not having.
- PURPOSE IN LIFE
Your purpose in life will lay the foundation for your successes or
failures. If your purpose is weak, you are off to a poor start, which will
likely weaken further as challenges arise.
- HEALTH
You may not want to hear this, but without the health and energy to
pursue your goals it is game over. Being
successful is not easy, nor is it difficult, it just requires having the energy
to get things done without delay. You have to be battle ready at all times; procrastination
will deflect your success so far it may begin to seem like a myth.
If you are not
exercising already, start now. This is not about achieving your ideal weight or
the correct body fat ratios, it is about reducing stress so you can think
faster on your feet.
5. NETWORKING
You are a walking
billboard for your business and an ambassador for your success, and as such networking
is an all day, every day, everywhere function.
- PASSION
Passion for what you are doing or want to do is the ingredient that will
keep you fighting fit on your road to success.
A question often
asked is, “Can I have passion for wanting or having money?” The answer is
absolutely YES, there is nothing wrong with wanting to have money or being
successful. The real question is how badly do you want it and what price are
you willing to pay?
- RELATIONSHIPS
It is the
relationships you establish with co-workers, bosses and customers where you are
‘the power of influence’ that gives you a competitive advantage. Dale
Carnegies’s well known book ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ is an excellent guide to creating and
maintaining long-term relationships.
- MASSIVE ACTION
When you know what you want it is Massive Action time. “What is massive
action?”, you ask. It means going to war for what you want; be it a promotion,
starting a new business, acquiring funding or something more personal.
Going to war for
what you want means you will not stop. If your current strategy is not yielding
results, try something new, take a break, regroup and try again. Plan and
research all that must be done in order to achieve the desired result and if
you have access to a success coach or mentor, they can help you get there even
quicker.
- ABILITY TO CHANGE
The ability to adapt will put you ahead in the game and the speed at
which you adapt is a serious competitive advantage if you plan to succeed with
nothing.
- EMOTIONS
Controlling or attempting to control your emotions gives you power. No communication, whether verbal or
non-verbal, has meaning until you ascribe meaning to it. Instead of immediately
making a negative association, assess all possible meanings of the
communication. I am always telling people there is no bad news, just news. We
are the ones who give the news meaning. For example, hearing that you car has
been stolen could be good news if you consider that you may use this
opportunity to buy the car of your dreams.
In conclusion, I leave you with this thought... Don’t quit, and remember,
if you believe you can, then you can.
